Best Colleges for Entrepreneurship in India (Founder Picks)

Most families judge an engineering college by one number: its highest package. The IITs are treated like placement factories, where you crack JEE, survive four years and then sign an offer letter. That picture misses half the story.
Look at where India's biggest startups came from. Flipkart, Zomato, Ola, Swiggy and Groww were all started by people who studied at a small group of campuses. Those campuses shared a few things: a dense alumni network of founders, a working incubator, and an academic culture that left students time to build things.
This guide covers the best colleges for startup founders in India. For each one, you'll see the entry exam, the founders it produced, the support it offers on campus, and an honest caveat.
Set expectations first: No college "makes" you a founder. Most of the founders named below worked in jobs for several years before starting up. Flipkart's founders worked at Amazon, and Groww's founders worked at Flipkart. A founder-heavy campus gives you three things: people to start with, mentors who have done it, and early access to incubation and investors. What you do with them is still up to you.
1. IIT Delhi: The Largest Unicorn-Founder Network in India
Founders from this campus
IIT Delhi has come out on top in every major count of Indian unicorn founders. A 2022 ThePrint analysis of 100 unicorns found 30 founders from IIT Delhi, more than any other institute. A December 2023 Entrackr analysis of 262 unicorn founders put the figure at 34. That is why the network is so valuable. Your seniors include people who have raised money, hired teams and taken companies public, and many of them still take calls from students on their own campus.
A strong founder network doesn't make for a startup-first campus culture. Most IIT Delhi students still take placements, and so did most of these founders when they graduated. You get the network by being active in it, through the entrepreneurship cell, projects and internships with alumni startups. It doesn't come automatically with the degree.
2. IIT Bombay: Founders Plus a 20-Year-Old Campus Incubator

IIT Bombay ranks second only to IIT Delhi in unicorn-founder counts, with 29 founders in the 2023 Entrackr analysis. What sets it apart is the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), its campus incubator. SINE became a formal entity in 2004 and has supported around 245 startups, including ideaForge, Atomberg and Gupshup. In late 2024, it announced plans for a โน100 crore fund for deep-tech startups.
SINE mostly incubates deep-tech and research-led ventures, often from faculty, PhD scholars and alumni. A first-year student with an app idea won't be walking in. Undergraduates usually reach the ecosystem through the E-Cell, its events, and internships with incubated startups.
3. BITS Pilani: Flexibility That Gives You Time to Build
Founders from this campus
BITS is the only non-IIT engineering institute that consistently appears near the top of unicorn-founder lists, with 10 founders in the 2023 Entrackr count. Many people credit its academic flexibility for this. BITS academic regulations set no minimum attendance for sitting exams, and the institute's startup policy allows student founders to take a semester break to work on their venture.
Myth-bust: "zero attendance" doesn't mean zero accountability. Attendance isn't required to sit exams. But a growing number of courses now award marks for attendance or class participation, and the administration has started pushing students to attend regularly. The flexibility only helps if you use the free time to build something.
BITS fees are significantly higher than IIT or NIT fees, and admission depends on BITSAT, not JEE, so it needs separate preparation. For families on a tight budget, factor in the total cost before treating BITS as a "startup campus" choice.
4. IIIT Hyderabad: A Research-Heavy Pipeline for AI and Deep-Tech Founders
IIIT Hyderabad has built its name on research in computer science, AI, robotics and language technologies. That background is what most deep-tech startups need. Its Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) started in 2008 and is recognised by DST as a Technology Business Incubator. CIE says it has supported over 400 startups and runs dedicated tracks for deep-tech, medtech and social-tech ventures.
Admission works in two ways. The single-degree B.Tech in CSE or ECE is through JEE Main. The dual-degree programmes, which pair a B.Tech with a research master's, are through IIIT Hyderabad's own UGEE exam. Agar coding aur research dono pasand hai, toh yeh campus seriously consider karo.
IIIT Hyderabad's alumni founder network is younger and smaller than the IITs' or BITS's. Its strength lies in technical depth, not decades of founder connections. It also expects heavy academic work, so students who join to "do a startup" without enjoying research often struggle. Its JEE Main cutoffs for CSE are among the most competitive in the country.
5. NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal: Trusted Alumni and Founder-Friendly Policies
NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal are consistently among the top-ranked NITs, and their alumni hold senior roles across Indian and global tech companies. For a founder, that matters. Your first hires, advisors and early customers often come from people who already trust your college name.
Both campuses back that network with formal support. NIT Trichy's CEDI (Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Incubation) offers seed support of up to โน25 lakh for technology startups, as listed on its website. NIT Warangal's 2024 startup policy allows student founders to take a semester or year break, and it provides seed support through its Centre for Innovation and Incubation.
NITs produce far fewer unicorn founders than IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay or BITS, and their incubators are smaller. Early funding is real but modest. "Angel networks" here usually means individual alumni, not a large organised fund. The upside is that you can reach these campuses through JEE Main, so they remain open to students whose JEE Advanced result doesn't go their way.
Want to Pick a College for the Career You Want?
If you want to start a company someday, your college and branch choice should look different from a pure placement-driven list. Margdarshan helps students map rank โ college โ branch โ career, built around their actual goals, whether that's founding a startup, research, or a top job.

How to Choose a College If You Want to Build a Startup
- Choose with your rank, not your dream list. JEE Advanced opens IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, BITSAT opens BITS, and JEE Main opens IIIT Hyderabad and the top NITs. Prepare seriously for more than one exam.
- Weigh the network over the highest package. If founding a company matters to you, look at who the alumni are and whether they stay involved with campus. A record-breaking placement number tells you nothing about that.
- Pick a branch you can build with. CSE and ECE make software and hardware products easier to prototype. But plenty of founders came from Mechanical, Chemical or other branches. Skill matters more than branch name.
- Plan for a job first, startup second. Most founders above worked for a few years before starting up. A strong first job gives you savings, skills and co-founders.
A note for parents: Wanting your child to start a company someday doesn't mean they should skip placements. The founders in this article mostly built their companies after working for a few years, and many startups fail. Choosing a founder-friendly campus doesn't add risk, because these are all strong colleges with good placements anyway. It simply keeps more options open for your child later.
