Plan B After JEE Main 2026: Best Colleges for 95–99 Percentile

JEE Main 2026 results are out. You scored between 95 and 99 percentile — which is genuinely exceptional — but the NIT branch or campus you wanted did not come through in JoSAA. That is a frustrating position to be in, but it is not a dead end. It is a decision point.
There are colleges in India that place students at Google, Microsoft, Uber and McKinsey, that are outside the NIT system entirely, and that have counselling rounds opening right now. This guide covers exactly what your options are, what the timelines look like, and how to act fast.
Best Colleges for 95–99 Percentile Students
IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad is widely regarded as one of the best technology institutions in India outside the IIT system. Its research culture, faculty quality and industry connections are exceptional. CSE and ECE at IIIT-H are among the most sought-after undergraduate programs in the country — and for good reason. Placement outcomes regularly rival IIT campuses.
Admission happens through UGEE (Undergraduate Entrance Examination), which is separate from JoSAA. Students with strong JEE Main scores and solid problem-solving ability are competitive. If you have not applied yet, check the UGEE portal immediately — offer letters go out mid-June.
Top Recruiters: Google, Microsoft, Uber, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Qualcomm, Tower Research
Career Paths: Software Engineering, AI/ML Research, Product Engineering, Quant Finance, Startups
Why It's a Strong Plan B: At ₹25–35 LPA average, IIIT-H placements match or beat several older NITs. The peer group, research infrastructure and alumni network are genuinely world-class. If you missed IIT but have the aptitude, this is arguably the strongest alternative.
IIIT Delhi
IIIT Delhi is a newer institution but has built one of the most impressive placement records among Delhi's technical colleges. Its Computational Biology (CB) branch is unique in India and a strong option for students interested in bioinformatics, data science and health tech. CSE and ECE are both highly competitive.
Admissions for Delhi-region students happen via JAC Delhi. Round 2 opens June 26 — if you missed Round 1 or are reconsidering your options, this is the window you should target.
Top Recruiters: Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Samsung R&D, Qualcomm, D.E. Shaw, Oracle
Career Paths: Software Engineering, Data Science, Bioinformatics, VLSI Design, AI Research
Why It's a Strong Plan B: IIIT Delhi has the brand, research culture and placement outcomes to justify serious consideration. Its ₹18–28 LPA average is stronger than many NITs, and the Delhi location gives students access to startup ecosystems, internships and industry events year-round.
DTU — Delhi Technological University
DTU is one of the oldest and most respected state technical universities in India. Its CSE and IT branches are extremely competitive and consistently produce strong placement outcomes. The campus culture, alumni network and industry connections in Delhi make DTU a genuinely attractive destination for students who want a strong engineering career in a great city.
DTU's brand within Delhi's corporate and startup ecosystem is significant. Many senior technology and business leaders are DTU alumni, which directly benefits students during placements and networking.
Top Recruiters: Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Paytm, Zomato, Deloitte, Accenture, JP Morgan
Career Paths: Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Product Management, Consulting, Finance
Why It's a Strong Plan B: For a 95–99 percentile student, CSE or IT at DTU via JAC Round 2 is a very competitive outcome. The Delhi location, strong alumni network and solid placement history make this a realistic path to top-tier roles at tech companies and consulting firms.
NSUT — Netaji Subhas University of Technology
NSUT (formerly NSIT) is consistently ranked among Delhi's top engineering colleges. Its Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) branch is one of the best and most unique branches in the Delhi university system. CSE and ECE both have strong placements and a competitive student body.
NSUT students benefit from the same Delhi ecosystem advantages as DTU — proximity to top companies, active startup culture, and a large alumni network spanning technology, finance and consulting.
Top Recruiters: Amazon, Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Adobe, Samsung, Capgemini, startups
Career Paths: Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, Networking, Data Analytics, Product Roles
Why It's a Strong Plan B: NSUT's ICE branch is underrated and worth serious attention. For students who want Delhi, strong peer group and solid placements without the extreme competition of DTU CSE cutoffs, NSUT CSE or ICE are smart targets in JAC Round 2.
Thapar University, Patiala
Thapar University is one of India's most respected private engineering universities and a consistent performer in placements. Admission is based on JEE Main scores, so your existing score directly applies — no additional exam required. The CSE and ECE programs are both well-regarded, and the campus has strong industry partnerships across technology, semiconductors and manufacturing.
Thapar is a smart choice for students who want a strong engineering education at a private institution with proven placement outcomes, and who may not have secured their preferred branch through JoSAA.
Top Recruiters: Microsoft, Amazon, Infosys, TCS, HCL, Honeywell, DRDO, startups
Career Paths: Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, VLSI, Data Science, Core Engineering
Why It's a Strong Plan B: No additional exam. Your JEE Main score is enough. Counselling runs through June–July, giving you time to apply even if other options are still being evaluated. At ₹12–20 LPA average, Thapar competes with many NITs for the same student profile.

Book Career Counselling SessionJAC Delhi Round 2 — What You Need to Know
JAC (Joint Admission Counselling) Delhi is the centralised counselling process for DTU, NSUT, IIIT Delhi, IGDTUW and other Delhi technical colleges. If you missed Round 1 or did not get your preferred branch, Round 2 is your next opportunity — and it opens June 26.
How to Prepare for JAC Round 2
- Confirm your eligibility. JAC Delhi is open to students with valid JEE Main 2026 scores. Delhi-domicile students and outside-Delhi students compete in different quota pools — know which category applies to you.
- Study last year's cutoffs. Look at Round 2 closing ranks from JAC 2025 for each college and branch. This tells you which seats are realistically within your rank range.
- Prepare your choice list in advance. Do not fill choices randomly on the day. Rank colleges and branches by preference based on career goals, location and cutoff data. Have at least 8–10 choices ready.
- Fill all viable branches, not just CSE. IT, ECE, and ICE at NSUT and DTU can have more accessible cutoffs in Round 2 and lead to the same career outcomes with the right effort.
- Keep documents ready. Class 10 and 12 marksheets, JEE Main scorecard, domicile certificate, category certificate if applicable, and passport-size photographs. Delays in document submission can result in seat cancellation.
- Do not hold out indefinitely. If a good seat opens in Round 2, accept it. Waiting for Round 3 or spot rounds carries risk — top seats disappear fast and may not return.

How to Evaluate Your Options
Common Mistakes Students Make at This Stage
- Waiting too long hoping JoSAA upgrades will come through — act on Plan B now, in parallel.
- Only targeting CSE and ignoring IT, ECE and ICE which can lead to identical roles.
- Not checking UGEE eligibility for IIIT Hyderabad — many students miss this entirely.
- Filling JAC choices on Day 1 without researching previous year cutoffs.
- Choosing college brand over branch fit — a well-matched branch leads to better outcomes than a prestigious branch you struggle in.
- Assuming private universities are always worse — Thapar's placements outperform many government colleges.
