Non-Engineering Courses at IITs 2026: Economics, Design & Medical (No JEE Options)

When you hear "IIT," you think "B.Tech." But the landscape has changed. IITs are no longer just for engineers. Over the last few years, the Indian Institutes of Technology have diversified their curriculum to include world-class programs in Design, Economics, Medicine, and Management.
Some of these courses pay higher than traditional engineering branches, and many don't even require JEE Advanced. This guide provides a detailed breakdown of every non-engineering undergraduate option available at IITs for the 2025-26 academic session.
Part 1: On-Campus Degrees (The Full College Experience)
These are full-time, 4-year or 5-year programs where you live on campus, attend regular classes, and get the complete "IIT Life."
1. Science & Economics (B.S. Degrees)
Unlike traditional B.Sc. degrees, these 4-year B.S. programs are research-intensive and share a curriculum with engineering branches.
B.S. in Economics (IIT Bombay)
A highly prestigious course focusing on econometrics, finance, and data analysis.
- Entrance: JEE Advanced.
- Who is this for? Math lovers who want high-paying corporate roles in finance/consulting.
- Placement Goldmine: Average package is ₹23.5 LPA. Roles include high-frequency trading and analytics, rivaling B.Tech CSE placements.
B.S. in Medical Sciences & Engineering (IIT Madras)
A unique interdisciplinary program bridging the gap between medicine and engineering.
- Entrance: IAT (IISER Aptitude Test). Note: It does NOT use JEE.
- Eligibility: Class 12 Science (Must have Mathematics + Biology/Chemistry/Physics).
- Who is this for? Students interested in the intersection of tech and healthcare (e.g., medical devices, AI in health).
B.S. in Chemistry / Mathematics / Physics
Available at IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur, Bombay, and Roorkee.
- Entrance: JEE Advanced.
- Placements: Graduates often pivot to Software or Data Science. Average packages range from ₹15–20 LPA depending on coding skills. Many also pursue Ph.Ds abroad.
2. Design (B.Des Degrees)
The Bachelor of Design (B.Des) is a 4-year program for creative students interested in Product Design, UX/UI, Animation, and Interaction Design.
- Top Colleges: IIT Bombay (IDC), IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee.
- Entrance Exam: UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design).

3. Architecture (B.Arch)
A 5-year degree focusing on planning, design, and construction.
- Top Colleges: IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
- Entrance: You must qualify JEE Advanced first, then sit for the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test).
- Eligibility (Strict): Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (Minimum 75% aggregate).
- Placement:
- IIT Roorkee: Median Package ₹10 LPA; Average ~₹20 LPA.
- IIT Kharagpur: Median Package ₹12.32 LPA.
4. Management (Integrated MBA)
IIT Mandi (IMBA): A 5-year dual degree combining BBA Analytics + MBA in Data Science & AI.
- Entrance: JEE Main (Paper 1) Rank + Personal Interview.

Part 2: New-Age Online/Hybrid Degrees (Flexible Entry)
These programs offer flexible learning structures and often do not require JEE ranks.
1. IIT Madras Online Degrees
B.S. in Data Science & Applications:
- Entrance: Qualifier Exam. This involves a 4-week online course followed by an in-person exam. Pass the exam, and you are admitted.
- Eligibility: Class 12 pass (Any Stream) + Mathematics & English in Class 10.
- Placements: Median Salary ₹8 LPA. Highest reported ₹1.2 Cr (often for experienced learners upskilling).
B.S. in Electronic Systems:
- Entrance: Qualifier Exam (Math & Physics focus).
- Eligibility: Class 12 with Math & Physics.
2. IIT Patna Hybrid Degrees
BBA / B.Sc. (Hybrid Mode):
- Format: "Hybrid" courses with online lectures and mandatory campus immersions.
- Entrance: Accepts scores from JEE Main, NEET, CUET, or SAT.
