Engineering Branches Nobody Talks About | ₹40 LPA Without CSE

Every year, thousands of JEE Advanced students open the JoSAA portal and do the same thing: scroll until they find CSE, pick the best IIT their rank allows, and stop thinking. They never look at the branches below. They never ask what those branches actually lead to.
That is an expensive mistake. Some of the highest-paying, fastest-growing and most intellectually rewarding careers in 2026 come from branches that most students skip without a second glance.
Branches You Are Probably Ignoring
Mathematics & Computing (MnC)
🔥 Highest Packages in This List 📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~500–1500 (IIT Delhi)Mathematics & Computing sits at the intersection of pure mathematics, statistics, algorithms and computer science. It is one of the most intellectually demanding and financially rewarding programs at IIT Delhi — and one of the least understood by students filling JoSAA choices.
MnC graduates are highly sought after in quantitative finance (Jane Street, Tower Research, D.E. Shaw, Goldman Sachs), AI research (DeepMind, Google Brain), and data science leadership roles. The mathematical depth of the program gives graduates an edge that a standard CSE degree rarely provides.
Top Recruiters: Jane Street, Tower Research Capital, D.E. Shaw, Goldman Sachs, Google, Microsoft Research, Two Sigma, Quadeye
Career Paths: Quantitative Analyst, Algorithm Engineer, AI Researcher, Data Scientist, Software Engineer, Actuary
Why Students Sleep On It: The word "Mathematics" scares people. Students assume it means academia or teaching. In reality, MnC is one of the fastest tickets to the highest-paying roles in the market — quant trading firms pay ₹40–80 LPA to fresh MnC graduates who clear their hiring process. CSE rarely competes at that ceiling.
Engineering Physics
📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~800–2000 (IIT Bombay)Engineering Physics is the branch for students who are genuinely fascinated by how the world works at a fundamental level — and who want to build the next generation of technology from that foundation. The curriculum covers optics, quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, electrodynamics and semiconductor physics at a depth that no other branch touches.
In 2026, this branch has become strategically valuable. As India builds its semiconductor ecosystem, as quantum computing moves from research to commercial reality, and as deep-tech startups multiply, Engineering Physics graduates are entering a market that desperately needs people with their skill set.
Top Recruiters: Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, ISRO, DRDO, Samsung Semiconductor, Applied Materials, IISc, global research labs
Career Paths: Semiconductor Engineer, Quantum Computing Researcher, Photonics Engineer, VLSI Designer, Deep-Tech Founder, PhD at MIT/Stanford
Why Students Sleep On It: Students assume Engineering Physics means research forever. It does not. The branch gives you a unique technical identity that hardware companies and semiconductor fabs are actively seeking — and the PhD pathway to global universities is among the strongest of any IIT program.
Industrial Engineering (IE)
📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~1500–3500 (IIT Delhi)Industrial Engineering is one of the best-kept secrets in the IIT system. It combines operations research, supply chain management, data analytics, systems thinking and optimization — skills that McKinsey, BCG, Amazon and Flipkart pay very well for. IE graduates are problem-solvers who can look at a complex system and find where the inefficiency lives.
Consulting firms love IE graduates because the branch builds the same structured thinking that firms spend months teaching MBA students. Amazon Operations, Flipkart Supply Chain, and e-commerce logistics companies regularly make top offers to IE graduates specifically because of this systems mindset.
Top Recruiters: McKinsey & Company, BCG, Bain, Amazon Operations, Flipkart, EY, Deloitte, Uber, KPMG, Morgan Stanley
Career Paths: Management Consultant, Operations Manager, Supply Chain Analyst, Business Analyst, Data Analyst, MBA at IIM/ISB
Why Students Sleep On It: The word "Industrial" makes students picture factory floors. Modern Industrial Engineering is nothing like that. It is optimization, analytics, operations research and systems design — directly applicable to tech companies, consulting firms and e-commerce giants. The branch also has more accessible JoSAA cutoffs than CSE, making it a genuinely smart strategic pick.
Metallurgical & Materials Engineering
🔥 Booming with India's Semiconductor Push 📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~4000–8000 (IIT Bombay)Metallurgical & Materials Engineering is the branch of the future that most students think belongs in the past. The reality in 2026 is the opposite. India's semiconductor mission — with billions of dollars flowing into chip fabrication plants from Tata Electronics, Micron and others — is creating massive demand for materials engineers who understand how semiconductors are actually made.
Beyond semiconductors, aerospace composites, battery materials for EVs, advanced steel for defence and infrastructure, and biomaterials for medical devices are all areas where Materials Engineering is central. This branch has one of the widest industry footprints of any IIT program.
Top Recruiters: Tata Steel, JSW, Intel, Applied Materials, ISRO, DRDO, Micron, Saint-Gobain, McKinsey (via MBA), global research programs
Career Paths: Process Engineer, Materials Scientist, Semiconductor Fabrication Engineer, R&D Researcher, Defence Technology, EV Battery Engineer
Why Students Sleep On It: Legacy perception. Students associate Metallurgy with outdated industries. In 2026, it is the backbone of semiconductors, aerospace, EVs and advanced manufacturing. The JoSAA closing ranks are significantly more accessible than CSE, and the long-term career value — especially with India's semiconductor investment — has never been higher.
Engineering Design
📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~2000–5000 (IIT Madras)Engineering Design at IIT Madras is one of the most unique undergraduate programs in India. It teaches students how to design products, systems and experiences from the ground up — combining mechanical engineering, human factors, prototyping, UX research and manufacturing processes. It is the engineering equivalent of thinking like a product manager while building like an engineer.
In a world where software products dominate but hardware products — EVs, robotics, wearables, medical devices — are staging a comeback, Engineering Design graduates have a rare skill set. They can sit between the engineering team and the business team and make products that actually work for real users.
Top Recruiters: Apple, Samsung, Tata Motors, Mahindra, product design studios, UX firms, robotics startups, medical device companies
Career Paths: Product Designer, UX Engineer, Industrial Designer, Hardware Product Manager, Robotics Engineer, Design Consultant
Why Students Sleep On It: Only IIT Madras offers this program, which means most students never encounter it. It is not a mainstream branch in any IIT counselling guide. But for students who are strong in physics and mathematics but also deeply interested in design, product thinking and manufacturing, this branch is a better fit than CSE — and the JoSAA cutoff is far more accessible.
Semiconductor Technology
🔥 New Program — Almost No Competition 📊 JoSAA Closing Rank: ~3000–7000 (IIT Bombay / IIT Delhi)Semiconductor Technology is one of the newest and most strategically important programs introduced at IITs in recent years. It was created in direct response to India's semiconductor mission and the global chip shortage that exposed how dependent the world is on a small number of semiconductor manufacturers. This program is designed to build the engineers who will run India's chip fabs.
The curriculum covers VLSI design, semiconductor device physics, chip fabrication processes, process integration and electronic design automation. Graduates are being trained for roles that Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Samsung and TSMC have struggled to fill for years. Because the program is new, the first few batches will face almost no competition for a very small pool of highly specialized jobs.
Top Recruiters: Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Samsung Semiconductor, Micron, Tata Electronics, Applied Materials, Cadence, Synopsys
Career Paths: VLSI Design Engineer, Chip Design Engineer, Process Engineer, Semiconductor FAB Engineer, EDA Engineer, Research Scientist
Why Students Sleep On It: It is new, so no one has heard of it. The JoSAA cutoff is significantly lower than CSE, but the placement potential — especially as India's semiconductor industry matures — is very high. Students who join this program now will graduate into a market that is actively being built around their skill set. Early movers in a new industry almost always win.

Career Paths From Each Branch
How to Decide Between CSE and These Branches
The default logic most students use is: "Highest rank → Best IIT → CSE." That logic made more sense 10 years ago. In 2026, it is worth stress-testing. Here is a framework for thinking through it honestly.
You Have a Rank Under 1500 and Love Mathematics
Consider Mathematics & Computing at IIT Delhi before defaulting to CSE at a lower IIT. MnC at IIT Delhi can outperform CSE at IIT Roorkee or IIT Guwahati in placements — especially for quant finance and AI roles. The IIT brand plus the mathematical depth is a very powerful combination.
You Have a Rank Between 1500 and 4000
Industrial Engineering at IIT Delhi or Engineering Physics at IIT Bombay may be accessible and could outperform CSE at a lower-tier IIT for your specific career goals. IE is particularly strong if you are interested in consulting, operations or analytics. Engineering Physics is stronger if you are interested in hardware, research or semiconductors.
You Have a Rank Between 4000 and 8000
Semiconductor Technology or Engineering Design at accessible IITs deserve serious consideration. The closing ranks are more approachable, the industries are booming, and the competition within these branches is far lower than in CSE. You may get a better outcome from a niche branch at a top IIT than from CSE at a lower-ranked institution.
You Are Genuinely Passionate About Software
Then CSE is probably right for you. But be honest with yourself. Many students choose CSE because it is familiar, not because they have genuinely compared it to their other options. If your interest is in how things are built, how systems are optimized, or how the physical world works — one of these branches may be a far better fit.
You Want an MBA Later
Industrial Engineering, Mathematics & Computing and Engineering Design all produce excellent MBA candidates. If your long-term goal involves management, consulting or entrepreneurship, these branches give you a unique technical identity that makes your MBA application stand out compared to the hundreds of CSE graduates applying every year.
FAQs
For quant finance and AI research, MnC at IIT Delhi has placement outcomes that match or exceed CSE at several IITs. It depends on your career goal — for software engineering roles, CSE is broader; for high-paying quant and research roles, MnC has a structural advantage.
Very strong — particularly in semiconductors, quantum computing and deep-tech. India's semiconductor push and global hardware investment are creating significant demand for engineers with deep physics foundations. The PhD pathway to MIT, Stanford and ETH Zurich is also among the strongest from any IIT branch.
Yes — and consistently. McKinsey, BCG and Bain regularly recruit from IE programs at IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. The operations research and systems thinking that IE teaches is exactly what consulting firms value. IE graduates often perform better in case interviews than students from other branches.
No. In 2026, Materials Engineering is central to semiconductors, EV batteries, aerospace composites, medical devices and advanced manufacturing. Tata Electronics' new chip fab, Micron's operations in India, and ISRO and DRDO all need Materials Engineers. The perception of the branch is decades behind the reality.
It is new, which means the first few batches graduate into a market with very little competition for a very specialized skill set. India's semiconductor industry is being built right now, with government backing and private investment. Being an early specialist in a booming industry is rarely a bad strategy.
It is the only undergraduate Engineering Design program at an IIT, which makes IIT Madras graduates uniquely positioned. The curriculum combines mechanical engineering, user research, prototyping and product thinking — a skill set that hardware product companies, design consultancies and robotics startups find extremely valuable.
Yes. IIT students across all branches regularly move into software roles through internships, side projects and competitive programming. The IIT brand carries across branches. However, if your primary goal is software engineering, CSE remains the most direct route — these branches are strongest for students whose interests genuinely align with the branch.
The ranks given are approximate ranges based on recent JoSAA data. Actual closing ranks vary by year, category, round and institute. Always verify on the official JoSAA portal and check both opening and closing ranks across multiple rounds before finalizing choices.
Engineering Physics, Mathematics & Computing and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering are all excellent for global PhD programs. IIT graduates from these branches are regularly admitted to MIT, Stanford, Caltech, ETH Zurich and top European universities with strong funding packages.
There is no universal answer, but generally: for branches like MnC, Engineering Physics and IE, the IIT brand matters significantly. For more applied branches like Metallurgy and Semiconductor Technology, the program quality and location can matter as much as the IIT's overall ranking. This is exactly the kind of question worth discussing with a counsellor before filling JoSAA choices.
